Inspiration
I seek to have the screen reflect the multiplicity of walks of life, including stories that pass the Bechdel test, focus on women's experiences, and don't have a Prince Charming waiting in the wings. As an Asian American, a tale that also centered around family, obligation, duty, and estrangement was especially significant, and those feelings served as a rich foundation upon which magic surrealism could be built, leading to this script.
Meaning
The Japanese concept of omote represents the explicit or the public facing side of things while ura represents the implicit or the private face and its underlying reality. Likewise, this screenplay explores the outward-facing images we present and the complicated truths behind them as well as the life-changing decisions we face when all is revealed.
